The Twenty-One Card Spread Explained

What is a 21-Card Tarot Spread?

The 21-card Romany spread is a simple layout that reveals all sorts of information about your past, present, and future. While the three-card spread remains the most used by tarot card readers, the 21-card spread is highly recommended for those who want to uncover an exorbitant amount of information. Tarot cards are used to tell the story of your life path and reveal truths you cannot see/hear. Generally speaking, the more cards used in a reading, the more in-depth the reading will be.

How 21-Card Tarot Readings Work

During a 21-card tarot reading, seven cards will be drawn in a row, starting from the left-hand side and continuing on, leaving you with three rows and seven columns.

The Meaning of Each Row

The Top Row: This row represents your past, with the first card describing the distant past and the last card the more recent past.

The Middle Row: This row represents the present, with the first card describing recent past events and the last card showcasing what is happening right now.

The Bottom Row: This row represents your future, with the first card describing the immediate future and the last card detailing far-off events.

The Meaning of Each Column

Column 1: The Self

This column details the things that are most important to you.

Column 2: Your Environment

This column references the environment you live or work in.

Column 3: Goals and Dreams

This column showcases your desires, dreams, and fears about a situation you may find yourself in.

Column 4: Known Factors

This column reveals your knowledge and any plans you have made that have been put into action/already taken place.

Column 5: Your Destiny

The fifth column represents what surprises life may have in store for you—it is often the case that unexpected events pop up here.

Column 6: Short-Term Future

This column will reveal what is likely to occur in the near future.

Column 7: Long-Term Future

This column will reveal what is likely to occur in the distant future.
