How to Read Your Birth Chart: Step-by-Step Natal Chart Guide

Your birth chart is a map that lets you see why you think and act the way you do. Learn how to read it with this simple step-by-step natal chart guide.

To read your birth chart, start with your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs, then look at your planets, houses, and the aspects between them. Your natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born and reveals your personality, emotions, relationships, and life path. It can show you your natural tendencies, emotional needs, relationship patterns, and life lessons.

Keep reading if you’ve ever asked yourself:

  • Why do I think/do/say the things I do?
  • Why do I always date the same type of person?
  • Why am I so passionate about love and relationships?
  • What is my life purpose? Why am I here?

Your birth chart gives you a structured way to explore these questions in detail. If you're new to astrology, a popular place to start is with our guide to Understanding Astrology: A Beginner's Guide, which explains how birth charts, planets, and zodiac signs work together.

If your birth chart raises questions about your love life and relationships, many people will seek a love psychic reading to gain a clearer insight.

What Is Your Birth Chart?

Essentially, your birth chart is a map showing where all the planets were positioned when you were born.

This guide is based on principles used by professional astrologers to interpret natal charts, helping you understand how planetary placements, signs, and houses work together.

There are 3 key parts of your chart to learn:

  • Planets show you the energies influencing your life.
  • Signs show you how those energies are expressed.
  • Houses show you where they’re expressed in your life.

When you learn how to read each area of your birth chart, you’ll understand your unique astrological blueprint.

This is why compatibility varies between two people with the same Sun sign. Your Sun sign is just one part of your full birth chart, which is why two people with the same sign can still be very different.

To understand your birth chart in more detail, read our Guide to Understanding Astrology: A Beginner's Guide, which breaks down natal astrology, planetary positions, and house systems.

Birth Chart Reading - Birth Chart Wheel

What Information Do You Need to Read a Birth Chart?

Before you can read your birth chart accurately, you’ll need 3 pieces of information:

  • Date of birth.
  • Time of birth.
  • Place of birth.

To ensure the most accurate reading, make sure your birth time is as accurate as possible. House placements and your Rising sign can change if the birth time is off by even a few minutes.

If you don’t know your exact time of birth, that’s okay. You can still explore your Sun sign, Moon sign, and planetary sign placements, but your Rising sign and house placements may not be accurate.

Understanding your birth chart, or what is often called your natural chart, does take some research time, but once you understand the Signs of the Zodiac, reading birth charts is simple.

How to Read Your Birth Chart Step by Step

Step 1: Read Your Big Three Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign

Begin with your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs. These are the building blocks of your birth chart.

  • Sun Sign

Your Sun sign represents who you are at your core. Your identity, your strengths, and what you want to accomplish in life.

  • Moon Sign

Your Moon sign shows your emotional world. Your instincts, what you look for to feel safe and secure.

  • Rising Sign

Your Rising sign, also known as your Ascendant, represents how you present yourself to others. Your appearance, body language, and attitude towards life.

You can explore your Sun sign further in our Virgo personality traits or Cancer personality traits guides.

Step 2: Read Your Planets

Planets represent different parts of your personality and life experiences.

  • Sun – identity, purpose, vitality.
  • Moon – emotions, instincts, inner child.
  • Mercury – thoughts, communication, learning.
  • Venus – love, attraction, values.
  • Mars – action, desire, motivation.
  • Jupiter – growth, expansion, opportunities.
  • Saturn – discipline, responsibility, lessons learned.
  • Uranus – change, independence, innovation.
  • Neptune – intuition, dreams, spirituality.
  • Pluto – transformation, power, intensity.

How to interpret a planet:

  • Which sign is it in?
  • Which house is it in?
  • How does that sign inform how that planet influences your personality?

Ex: Venus in Libra in the 7th house could describe someone who values harmony, connections with others, and partnership in relationships.

Step 3: Read Your Houses

Your houses will show you where different areas of life will show up for you.

Each house represents a specific area of your life:

  • 1st House – Self, identity, physical appearance.
  • 2nd House – Money, values, self-worth.
  • 3rd House – Communication, short trips, siblings.
  • 4th House – Home, family life, roots.
  • 5th House – Romance, children, creativity, pleasure.
  • 6th House – Work life, health, daily routine.
  • 7th House – Partnerships, one-on-one relationships.
  • 8th House – Sexuality, intimacy, co-owning resources.
  • 9th House – Long-distance travel, philosophy, higher education.
  • 10th House – Career, authority, ambition.
  • 11th House – Community, friendships, goals.
  • 12th House – Subconscious mind, releases, endings.

Ex: Moon in the 4th house could describe someone with a strong emotional connection to home and family.

Step 4: Learn the Zodiac Signs on the Wheel

Around the outer part of your personal birth chart wheel, you will see the 12 zodiac signs: These are the energies of each planet.

  • The planet represents which area of your life is affected.
  • The sign represents how the energy displays itself.
  • The house represents where you experience it in your life.

Example:

  • Venus in Gemini may reveal someone who shares love with words, jokes, curiosity, and an intellectual connection.
  • Moon in Cancer may reveal someone with deep emotional needs and intuition, as well as an attachment to home and family.
  • Mars in Leo may reveal someone with a bold way of expressing their passion, confidence, and creative drive, with a need for their efforts to be acknowledged.

Zodiac signs colour the planet based on how they communicate their energy. They help you understand why two people can have the same placements but can come across so differently.

Zodiac Signs & Their Elements

Fire Signs 🔥

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Earth Signs 🌿

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

Air Signs 🌬️

Gemini

Libra

Aquarius

Water Signs 🌊

Cancer

Scorpio

Pisces

Each zodiac sign is associated with one of the four elements:

  • Fire signs are bold, active, passionate (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
  • Earth signs are grounded, practical, and stable (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
  • Air signs are mental, social, communicative (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
  • Water signs are emotional, intuitive, and sensitive (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Planets take on the qualities of the sign they are located in. That sign will ‘colour’ how that planet expresses itself in your chart.

Step 5: Learn the Basics of Planetary Aspects

The lines inside your chart are called aspects. Aspects show the relationship between two planets.

When planets create aspects to each other, they can either:

  • Flow together naturally (Trine, Sextile).
  • Need some work (Square, Opposition).
  • Gain strength from each other when combined (Conjunction).

Examples of aspects:

  • Sun square Mars.
  • Moon trine Jupiter.
  • Venus opposite Neptune.

What that means:

  • Your Sun and Mars may clash or cause you tension.
  • Your Moon and Jupiter support each other. They provide opportunity and encouragement to follow your intuition.
  • You might confuse what you want (Venus) with your ideals/noble goals (Neptune).

Learning about aspects can help you understand how the different energies of your chart work together.

Here is a quick-reference guide to the most important placements for beginners:

Placement: What It Shows

  • Sun Core identity.
  • Moon Emotions.
  • Rising First impression.
  • Venus Love style.
  • Mars Desire.

How to Read Your Birth Chart (Example)

Let’s say you have the following birth chart placements:

  • Sun in Taurus in the 10th House.
  • Moon in Cancer in the 4th House.
  • Virgo Rising.
  • Venus in Gemini in the 11th House.
  • Mars in Leo in the 12th House.

What This Could Mean

  • Sun in Taurus (planet) in the 10th house

This suggests someone who puts their attention towards their career. They want to build something long-lasting and gain stability in their work life.

  • Moon in Cancer (sign) in the 4th house

This suggests someone who has a very strong emotional connection to their home. They value family and find comfort in familiar surroundings.

  • Virgo Rising

This would show you present yourself to others as detail-oriented, logical, and analytical.

  • Venus in Gemini (planet) in the 11th house

This would suggest someone who values communication, lots of laughter, and friendships within their relationships.

  • Mars in Leo (planet) in the 12th house

This would show you someone who has a lot of drive and ambition, but it’s often hidden or expressed privately.

Instead of viewing each section of your chart in isolation, look for where they reinforce each other.

How to Read a Birth Chart (Visual Guide)

If you’re reading a chart using the chart wheel:

  • The outer ring = zodiac signs.
  • Coloured sections = houses.
  • Symbols in boxes = planets.
  • Left side of the chart = Rising sign (Ascendant).
  • Top of the chart = Midheaven (MC) = career direction.
  • Lines = aspects connecting planets.

Charts are read starting from the left and going counterclockwise.

You begin reading a chart from your Rising sign because it sets the structure for the rest of your chart.

What Does Your Birth Chart Reveal About Love & Relationships?

Astrology can help you gain powerful insight into your relationship patterns, emotional needs, attraction style, and what you’re naturally drawn to in partners.

There’s not one placement that can tell you the answer, but there are various places in your chart that combine to show you how you give and receive love, what you need to feel secure, and why you keep attracting the same types of relationships.

Key Areas in Your Birth Chart That Relate to Love:

  • Venus Sign – How you give love, what you love, attraction, affection, what you look for in relationships.
  • Moon Sign – Your deep emotional needs, attachment style, security, and what you need to feel loved.
  • 7th House – Long-term partnerships, commitment, marriage, and the qualities of the person you attract.
  • Mars Sign – Desire, sex drive, passion, chemistry, how you go about getting what you want.
  • 5th House – Romance, dating, pleasure, attraction, fun, early love.

Astrology can help you understand the deeper questions you have about love, like…

This is why many people turn to their birth chart first when searching for a love psychic reading, especially if they’re feeling confused by mixed signals or are trapped in repeating relationship patterns.

If you find yourself asking why you always seem to question your patterns with love and relationships, a birth chart reading can help you better understand your romantic life.

Career Answers From Your Natal Chart

Your personal birth chart can also give you insight into your work life, your strengths, and what you’re here to give to the world.

Here are a few areas to look at:

  • 10th House – Career, ambition, what you want to build in life.
  • Midheaven (MC) – Your life direction and where you want to shine.
  • Saturn – Discipline and long-term growth.
  • Jupiter – Expansion and opportunities coming your way.
  • 6th House – Daily work, jobs, and your health routines.

Does Your Birth Chart Tell You the Future?

Your astrological birth chart cannot predict set-in-stone events that will happen to you.

However, it can give you clues about certain themes in your life. Your timing, where periods of growth show up, and more.

Astrologers will often use different techniques such as:

  • Transits.
  • Progressions.
  • Solar returns.

To identify upcoming periods of change, growth, and expansion in a person’s life.
