Psychic Vs Medium: What’s the Real Difference?

By Joanne Jones | Founder of Trusted Psychics | Psychic Medium | 30+ Years' Experience

If you're trying to understand the difference between a psychic and a medium, you have probably already discovered that the terminology can become confusing very quickly.

Psychic.

Medium.

Psychic medium.

Clairvoyant.

Intuitive reader.

Sometimes the same reader uses several of these terms. Sometimes two readers appear to offer similar readings but describe their abilities differently.

Psychic readings generally speak about you and your life. Medium readings generally attempt contact with deceased persons. Many readers do both types of readings and are called psychic mediums.

Whether you’re struggling to understand a relationship, thinking of changing careers, or feeling stuck between options on an important decision, you might be looking for a little insight that may help you see things more clearly.

Psychics often explain their abilities in terms of picking up impressions about a person’s situation, relationships, and possible futures. How they receive these impressions varies.

While some psychics describe themselves as clairvoyant (receiving intuitive images or visions), others are tuned in to feelings, sounds, thoughts, intuition, or just a strong sense of knowing. They may also use tarot cards or other divination tools to help give the reading focus.

What Is the Difference Between a Psychic and a Medium?

The main difference between a psychic and a medium is what they focus on during the reading.

A psychic generally uses intuitive or psychic abilities to interpret information relating to a person's circumstances, relationships, emotions, choices, and possible future direction.

A medium specifically attempts to communicate with spirits associated with people who have passed away and interpret messages received during that connection.

The terms can overlap because some readers work as both psychics and mediums. However, being psychic does not automatically mean somebody offers mediumship.

Here is the simplest comparison.

Psychic Medium

Focuses primarily on the person having the reading and their life. During a medium reading, the reader may attempt spirit communication.

These types of readings often explore relationships, career, choices, and future possibilities. Often sought in connection with someone who has passed away.

A psychic medium’s ability works through intuition, energy, and psychic senses.

The central question is often “What is happening in my life?” “Can I feel a connection with someone I've lost?”

Does not need to offer mediumship; may also possess or use broader psychic abilities.

Best suited to guidance and reflection around your circumstances. Best suited to those specifically seeking a mediumship experience

The difference becomes much easier to understand when you stop thinking about what the reader is called and start thinking about where the reading is being directed.

What Does a Psychic Actually Do?

A psychic reading generally begins with you and your circumstances.

You might be thinking about a relationship that has become difficult to understand, or you may be considering changing jobs. Read our helpful guide on Love Psychic Readings.

Perhaps there is a decision you keep going backwards and forwards over, or you simply feel that something in your life is changing and want another perspective.

Psychics traditionally describe receiving intuitive impressions about people, situations, and possible directions. Different readers may describe or experience those impressions in different ways.

Some may identify as clairvoyant or channelling psychics, meaning they associate their ability primarily with intuitive seeing or imagery. Others describe intuitive feelings, sounds, thoughts or simply a strong sense of knowing.

Some readers also use tarot or other tools to give structure to the reading.

But the important distinction is not necessarily the tool.

It is the focus of the reading.

In a psychic reading, the central subject is generally your life.

That means the reading might explore what has happened, what appears to be influencing the present and what possibilities the reader feels may be developing.

Possible futures should not, however, be treated as fixed guarantees. Your decisions still matter. Other people's choices still matter. Circumstances change.

A responsible psychic reading should offer perspective without taking ownership of your decisions away from you.

What Does a Medium Actually Do?

A mediumship reading is approached differently. Rather than focusing mainly on your current situation, a medium uses their extrasensory perception to receive information they believe comes from deceased individuals.

They may receive details in words, pictures, emotions, memories, or any other form of intuitive sensation.

A reputable medium would not promise they can connect with a specific person. If you want a mediumship reading specifically, then ensure you pick a reader who states this as one of their skills.

A medium reading should be considered more of a spiritual experience than solid evidence that you are contacting the dead. It can also never be used in place of grief counselling or professional advice.

The Trusted Psychics “Direction of the Reading” Test

One of the simplest ways we have found to explain the difference between a psychic and a medium is to look at the direction of the reading.

Instead of trying to memorise different abilities and terminology, imagine there is an arrow running through the conversation.

Psychic Reading

You → your circumstances → your choices → possible directions.

Medium Reading

You → someone who has passed → attempted connection → interpretation.

  • The abilities may overlap.
  • The vocabulary may overlap.
  • The reader may even offer both services.
  • But the direction of attention is different.

That is often the quickest way to decide which type of reading you actually want.

Can Someone Be Both a Psychic and a Medium?

Yes. This is one of the main reasons the terminology becomes confusing.

A reader may describe themselves as a psychic medium because they both offer psychic mediumship readings. That does not mean every psychic is automatically a medium.

It is more useful to think of these as overlapping abilities rather than two completely separate professions.

Someone may primarily give psychic readings but also offer mediumship. Another reader may specialise almost entirely in medium readings.

Another may describe themselves as a psychic medium but have a particular strength or preference for one type of reading.

Before choosing a reader, read their online profile. Look at the abilities and reading types they describe.

And most importantly, decide what you want the reading to concentrate on.

Psychic, Medium or Psychic Medium: Which One Do You Actually Need?

This is where the distinction becomes useful in practice.

Psychic, Medium or Psychic Medium: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Start with your question.

Can You Ask a Psychic and a Medium the Same Questions?

Occasionally you can start with the same subject, but the focus of the question is different.

If you’re thinking about your deceased father, you may ask your psychic how losing him has impacted choices you are facing today. When speaking to a medium, however, your reason for bringing him up could be because you’re seeing if there is a mediumship connection.

This goes for relationships too. Inquiries about a current partner, former significant other or your future romantic prospects would typically lean towards psychic reading rather than mediumship. Read our useful guide on 25 Questions to Ask a Psychic Medium During a Reading.

Start by asking yourself what you want to learn.

Does a Medium Predict the Future?

Mediumship is primarily associated with receiving messages from spirits, rather than future predictions.

A medium may also have psychic abilities and therefore offer insight into your circumstances or future possibilities, but that is not what makes them a medium.

Likewise, a psychic need not communicate with spirits to be considered psychic.

This is where the phrase psychic medium becomes useful. It tells you that the reader may work across both areas. But do not assume every session automatically includes both.

If you specifically want a mediumship reading, choose a reader who clearly offers medium readings.

If you want guidance in your life, choose someone whose psychic reading experience aligns with the questions you want to explore.

Do Psychics and Mediums Have the Same Psychic Abilities?

Psychics and mediums may use some of the same intuitive or psychic abilities. However, they can use them with different intentions.

We see terms like clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and claircognisance. These essentially refer to intuitive seeing, hearing, feeling, and knowing.

A psychic may describe receiving an image about your relationship. A medium could use the same words to describe receiving an image that they associate with someone who has died.

The difference lies in what the reader believes the information is about or coming from.

Which also leads us onto why the term clairvoyant can be confusing. Clairvoyance means “clear seeing” and describes intuitive imagery or visual impressions.

The term clairvoyance refers to how someone perceives information more than the overall intention of their readings.

That’s why trying to label someone as a psychic or medium just by the “clairs” they use can become confusing.

If you want to know more about clairvoyance and how it differs from other psychic abilities, read our guide on Clairvoyant Readings.

What 30+ Years of Psychic Readings Has Taught Me

I've worked within psychic readings for more than 30 years, both as a psychic medium myself and through helping customers find readers at Trusted Psychics.

One thing that experience has taught me is that customers rarely come to us because they want to understand the technical definition of mediumship. They usually come because something is happening in their life. They may be struggling to understand a relationship, missing a lost loved one, or simply feeling that they've reached a crossroads.

When somebody asks me whether they need a psychic or a medium, I think there's a more useful question: “Who or what do I want this reading to be about?” If your answer is my life, start by looking at psychic readers. If your answer is someone I've lost, look for a medium. If your answer is genuinely both, look for a psychic medium whose profile clearly states that they work across both areas.

At Trusted Psychics, we've been helping people find readers since 1992. One thing that experience has reinforced is that the reader with the longest list of abilities isn't necessarily the right reader for you. What matters is finding someone whose abilities and approach match the conversation you actually want to have.

Joanne's advice: Don't worry about choosing the most impressive-sounding ability. Choose the reader whose experience best matches the reason you're calling.

What Should You Look for in a Psychic or Medium?

They should communicate with respect, be clear about what they can and cannot provide, and allow you to decide what you want. Psychics should not present their insights as certain. Futures are only possibilities. Mediums should not claim that their contact with Spirit is guaranteed.

Be cautious of a reader who:

Guarantees predictions will come true; or claims they can contact a specific person who has passed.

Says you are cursed or have to pay extra for a cleansing, spell, or curse removal.

Tells you to base decisions on recurring readings.

A responsible reader should offer perspective without taking control of your free will.

Frequently Asked Questions About Psychics and Mediums

Is a Psychic the Same as a Medium?

Not exactly. A psychic generally focuses on intuitive information about your life and circumstances, while a medium specifically attempts to communicate with people who have passed away.

There can be overlap because some people work in both roles.

Are All Mediums Psychic?

Within common mediumship terminology, mediumship is generally regarded as involving psychic or intuitive sensitivity, which is why you will often hear the phrase “all mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums.”

The important practical point is simpler: a psychic does not necessarily offer medium readings.

Can a Medium Also Give a Psychic Reading?

Some mediums can provide psychic readings.

Readers who work across both areas often describe themselves as psychic mediums. Check the individual reader's profile rather than assuming that every medium offers broader psychic guidance.

Should I Choose a Psychic or Medium After a Bereavement?

If your primary reason for having the reading is to explore a connection with a lost loved one, a medium is the more appropriate choice.

If the bereavement has instead made you reconsider your own life, relationships or future, and that is what you want to discuss, a psychic reading may better match your question.

Can a Psychic Communicate With Someone Who Has Died?

Not every psychic claims mediumship ability.

If communication associated with someone who has passed is specifically what you want, choose a reader who explicitly offers medium readings rather than assuming any psychic can provide one. Read our helpful article on 15 Signs a Deceased Loved One is Near You.

Is a Psychic Medium Better Than a Psychic?

No, having more abilities listed does not automatically make someone a better reader; take a few moments to read through their customers’ reviews.

A reader who specialises in the type of guidance you want may be a much better match than a psychic medium whose main focus is elsewhere.

Ultimately, the reader's abilities should match the conversation you want to have.
